11/24, What A Terrific Day !!!

On the 11/24, I got out of bed slightly after 7 am and after attending to some routine household chores I went straight to clean up myself. While showering, my right eye got numb and eventually I cannot see anything with my right eye. For a moment, I stood still and shocked with what was happening to me. But, after a short while, I managed to regain my vision on my right eye.

As I was all alone in my house on that morning, I got out of my house and seek medical assistance at soonest possible. Before I can hit the expressway, the same problem came back again. I stopped my car along the road, worried and panic as to what I should be doing next. I closed my right eye and try to see with my left eye. Yes, I can see. But, when I closed my left eye and try to see with my right eye, I saw nothing at all. Later, very slowly the vision came back again. So, I drove off again.

I finally reached my destination. But, it was still early for my usual Eye Clinic to open for consultation. So I went for my breakfast. Half way through, the same problem started to disturb me again. I got up to settle my bill and leave the place before anything bad happens to me. I managed to get into my car  and called the Eye Clinic to check if the Eye Speiallist had arrived. It happens that the good Doctor will be coming in only after lunch. So, I headed straight to the General Hospital instead of driving all over the town to look for another Clinic or Doctor to attend to my needs.

Once at the General Hospital, I was advised by a nurse to head straight to the emergency section for assistance. After, registering myself and having made my payment, I had my blood pressure checked almost immediately. Then, I was ready to see the Doctor in attendance. Whilst with the Doctor, the problem started to come back again. I can feel my right eye getting insensitive again and the vision on that eye was getting smaller very slowly. But, it did not turn off this time. As my eye was not dillated, the Doctor in attendance cannot see anything and I was then refered to the Eye Clinic at the General Hospital.

At the Eye Clinic, I managed to have my vision tested very quickly. But, to see the Doctor there, I have to wait for more than an hour standing at her door. She finally agreed to attend to me even though it was not my turn yet. She checked the pressure, then dillated both eyes and told me to wait for another half an hour. When it was time to have my eyes examined, I went into her room and waited for my turn. Eventually, she attended to me and I was told that she cannot see anything at all. She dillated my eyes again and told me to see her again after lunch.

Well, if it is going to be after lunch, I can consult my usual Eye Specialist instead. With some difficulties I finally managed to arrive at his clinic in one piece. As my eyes were well  dillated at that time, my Eye Specialist was able to conclusively determined that I need to have another laser treatment on both eyes at earliest possible. The good Doctor also said that sometimes blood flow can lead to the problem with my right eye. Finally, I was dispensed a box of Caspirin and told to take one a day.

Now that it was not a retina detachment, an eye stroke and so forth, I felt more relieved. I proceeded with my next task for the day before I finally reached home in the evening. After dinner, I took my box of Caspirin along with the day's newspapers to my room. I wanted to read what was printed on the box. Well, really nothing much of interest except that it was manufactured in June 2006 and expired in June 2008.

I really cannot believe what I had read. It took me a while to digest what I had read and finally accepted the reality that I was dispensed a box of long expired Caspirin by my good Doctor, an Eye Specialist. So, I cannot have my Caspirin that night.

11/24, was really an extremely bad day for me, where everything went wrong. Extremely wrong.

Oh, what a day, a terrific day.

Note: My long absence was mainly due to problems  that I have with my vision. In fact, I have refrained from many activities in the past few months so that I can rest my eyes more often.

  1. 1. was that caspirin or aspirin?...never heard of "caspirin"....but could be a "brand" name for salycilic acid or also known as the good ole aspirin.
    2. Were you hypertensive?
    3. what kind of "laser" treatment was being utilized on your eyes, for what purpose...glaucoma?, cataracts, history of retinal detachment?
    4. Did you have a CT or MRI of the head at one point, if the etiology of the transient blindness is not obvious?

    Good luck....riff

  2. Hi Riff,

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. Have been trying to post my reply umpteen times but failed.

    1. Yes. Another brand name of aspirin family.
    2. Hypertensive. It was 180/100 after medication that day.
    3. Diabetic Retinopathy and early stage of Cataract in both eyes. Right Eye still clear.
    4. Had an OCT done on 11/28 elsewhere.

Appreciates your genuine and kind concern very much. Thanks a lot and take care buddy !!!

    Michael.

  3. wow that's not a good b/p......I know if somebody presented to MY ER, with those symptoms.....you would have gotten a work over, the hospital has "pathways" we follow when a person presents with certain symptoms....from what you described...I can tell you, with the risk factors of
    1. Diabetes
    2. High blood pressure
    3. and neurological symptoms, even if it was only in the right eye

we would have CT'd the head ran cardiac profiles, ekg , chest x-ray, full neuro checks at least three times for about an hour and a half, in addition to an IV, glucose control, you would not have left the ER with a elevated b/p....and might have even been transferred to one of our hospitals with a neurologist on duty.....we tend to be VERRRRRRY thorough.....especially with hypertensive diabetics we have caught quite a few who came in with just a headache, and were flown out to the big hospital with a damn bleed...."Oh I just fell and bumped my head a little"....take care of yourself....and for gods sake watch that b/p like a hawk...that diabetes is an evil thing.....keep us posted....riff

  5. Thanks for your advice Riff. I really valued your professional opinion since I got to know you a few months ago.

My b/p is better now. But taking Caspirin may have given me some problems. Since last Thursday I have been having pains at my lower back and pain in uriniting. I cannot walk and stand properly because of the pain.

Been to see a GP yesterday. Hopefully it is just a muscular pull.

Not taking the Caspirin now. But, Riff should I continue taking it? The problem have not disturb me so far.

What is CT by the way?

    Thanks. Michael.

  6. CT=cat scan. Or computerized tomography. It would show up a bleed or old damage, and a few other things. But not damage in progress from lack of circulation. And as for that aspirin, make sure it hasn't expired, but check with your MD before starting or stopping any medications. There are a lot of reasons they have some people take a daily aspirin, most of the reasons are more of a preventative nature due to risk factors, rather than actively treating a condition. Always check with your doctor first. Riff
