Child Protection ....... Needed?

Don't get me wrong, I mean child protection for obese kids. It was suggested in Australia recently that child protection authorities be called in to handle "extreme" cases where parents just allowed their kids to get too fat.

Dr. Shirely Alexander of the Children's Hospital wrote in the Medical Journal about a four-year-young girl, standing at only 110cm but weighed a hefty 40kg. The girl watches TV for six hours a day and have temper tantrums. Dr. Alexander said that the "family failed to stop the child's weight gain." Authorities were notified and the girl was put on a dietary and physical activity programme.

Such "extreme" cases are not only confined to Australia. China, for instance has a fair share of obese kids running around. In fact, I would say that many countries do share this problem of "extreme" or obese kids cases as well. Is it really a good and healthy practice for parents to allow their kids to get too fat? Or, should we be pressing for the child protection call for obese kids now or later?
