Working Woes ......

There are no shortcuts when it comes to getting a promotion. Unless you are prepared to work for it, your chances of getting that corner room with the view is very slim indeed. Hard work is only half the battle won because you will never achieve your full potential unless you position yourself so that others wll become aware of your expertise and accomplishments. Therefore, you need to get noticed for the good work you are doing before a promotion can happen. Here are some tips to put you in the spotlight.

Be Proactive - Show initiative at work. Show your interest in the company by actively participating in office discussions and sharing your ideas when you have something valuable to add. The key word here is 'valuable.' Never speak up for the sole reason to be heard.

Take The Lead - Look for opportunities to take the lead on new assignments. But, make sure you are fully equipped it the necessary skills and time to take on the project or the plan will backfire and make you look really bad instead.

Always Improve Yourself - Expand your knowledge and skills especially in areas that are critical to the organisation. 

Network - Make sure you take time to attend company gatherings. These are excellent opportunities to hobnob with decision makers in a variety of important positions in your company. But, be sure to come prepared, bcause saying "Hi" is not enough. 

Develop Mentoring Relationship - Mentors can be a great source of information and career guidance. Approach the person politely for guidance and know that people genuinely to help you when you are sincerely seeking their advice.

Be Your Own PR Representative - Sell yourself. You have to learn to let your bosses know of your accomplishments. If you have a major accomplishment, make sure people know about them - especially the people doing the promoting. Let it be known that you re seekng a promotion.

Be A Team Player - No man is an island. Much of work is now accomplished through teams. Being a team player, you not only earn the respect of your colleagues, you are also building your reputation progressively and increases your value to your organisation. 

Be In Good Terms With Your Boss - Always maintain good relationship with your boss.

Build Your Network - The more people who know you, your strengths and abilities, your value to the organisation and your ambition, the more likely your name is discussed when opportunities arise.

Be Professional All The Time - You have to earn your reputation for being dependable, professioal and co-operative. Remember to always act and look the part - your appearance says a lot about you. Always remember that people like to see you in that role and your appearance speaks volume.
